ELAFONISOS

In the same direction as Monemvasia but within the Gulf of Laconia -and at a distance of 91 km from Mareggio Exclusive Residences and Suites, we find Elafonisos, renowned for its exceptional beaches, such as Simos. It became an island as a result of the earthquake of 375 A.D. (like Monemvasia) and its name may derive from the abundant game of red deer (Cervi) that could be found there since ancient times. For this reason and in later times Venetian maps of the 15th century refer to the island as Cervi. The village across from Elafonisos is called Vigklafia and its name probably comes from the words vigkla = lookout and elafia = deer, since onlookers used to watch the hunt on the Island from here. Elafonisos has an area of 19 sq. km, can be found just 570 m from the coast of Pounta and constitutes its own municipality. The ferryboat runs between the Island and mainland are very frequent -especially during the Summer. Don’t forget to visit Elafonisos and to swim in its aquamarine waters!
